Surviving a Re-Org

End of year is a time when companies and departments reflect on the previous year and begin planning for new projects and challenges in the coming year. It's also a time when departments usually restructure to bring more focus and fortification to the challenges ahead. It's a time to re-org.

Re-orgs can be stressful. If you've spent the previous year in one role it's natural to be a little intimidated if your role has changed. But re-orgs are a good thing.

Embrace change
When a department re-organizes it is re-focusing on a goal and changing its management structure. Maybe a new group has spun out from your group which would create openings in the group hierarchy above you which would be a great potential growth opportunity.

If your role has changed it is an opportunity to prove your versatility and to learn new things. Don't be resistant to change. Without change, in ten years you will be doing the same thing that you are doing now. And being paid relatively the same.

Adjust and thrive and it will be noticed. You should be challenging yourself constantly, look at this as just another challenge.

A New Manager is a New Learning Opportunity
Your previous manager may have been a mentor of yours, or maybe you just liked her management style. Don't discount the new opportunity you could have with a new manager.

It is a manager's job to bring you to their level. Not to arbitrarily promote you, but to train you and show you how to do their job. To inspire excellence from you and to guide you how to achieve it. Your new manager is in that position for a reason and by watching how she carries herself and leads and deals with the challenges at that level you are being trained to operate at that level.

Your time for even greater promotion will come, watch and observe and learn as much as you can to prepare yourself for the responsibilities and challenges that you'll face.

Clarify New Expectations
Your role is changing. Maybe you have a new focus, a new project to work on. Maybe you transitioned from a tactical to a strategic role. Maybe you are leading your first team or project.

Get clarification on the expectations of your new role from your manager. Make no assumptions. What are your high level goals, how do they align with your department goals, but also what is your day to day like? As you continue in the role make sure to ask for feedback so that you can further refine and improve.

Meet With Your New Team Individually
If you have new direct reports meet with them individually as soon as possible. Let them get to know you and you should start to get to know them.

Find out what motivates them, what they enjoy doing. Find out where they want to go with their career both in near and long term. Find out what they enjoy doing, what inspires them - do they enjoy heads down coding, or maybe architecting a solution, or maybe even interfacing with the business owners or other departments.

Make sure they understand the expectations of their roles. Make sure that you are available to them.

Above all else, embrace the change that a new re-orog presents and be prepared to take advantage of the new opportunities that it brings.

I know exactly what you are talking about when companies reorganize at the beginning of the year. For years I sold low cost health insurance and one year I was a manager then the next I was a seller. Ups and downs it is something you have to get used to for sure. This time is very stressful and this change is necessary for the survival of the business.

These reorganizations can be tough! I run a luxury villa rental company and I had to fire some people at our annual conference because it wasnt cost effective for the business for them to work there. Unfortunately the business is the most important thing because if it fails then no one has anything.

I have been involved in several reorganizations also. I am from California and I have been working in the Koi fish industry for over 20 years. I have seen many leaderships created and reorganized. The best thing to do is keep your head up and just try to do your best.

Thanks for the wonderful advice regarding business reorganization. The company I work for is an organic acai wholesale distributor and I heard through the grape vine that we will be facing a similar fate soon. I heard there could be possible layoffs. This makes me a little nervous but I will be ok.

I think business organization is the most important thing about it. If you are not organized you will not be able to track your sales and spendings.

When the economy is bad, you either trim up or your business will die along with it. I've been with the wedding favors industry for several years now and can tell you that orders has slowed down. Lay off people if you have to. You can always hire them back when the economy good.

There are a lot of resources out there on utron. It would take ages to study it all. What we've done is brought it all together, so that it's all available here, in this one place.

I know all about these reorganizations! I worked for a BloqUV company and they fired me because of this re organization. They really didnt give me a reason just that it was best for the company. I wish they would have showed me in black and white why I was to much of an expense.

Hi Tom,
Re-org play an important role in building career of a professional. I joined as Marketing Executive in an SEM company, but after few months I was shifted to another team. I thought its not a good sign for me as my previous manager was very kind to me(my misconception). So when I joined the new team, my manager provided me a lot of work to do, sitting long hours but just after 6 months my manager promoted me to team lead. This is due to learning under new manager.

So I believe that Re-org are important and must be considered positively, its just like a chance to learn new things and flourish your skills. Very nicely written article, I am happy to find it.
Thanks

Re-org is common sight nowadays with the economy down and spendings/ expenses need to be trimmed. I have my own web design firm providing website designs for accountants in my local area, and I faced a tough time making such decisions during the last 2 years. What the employees must do is to keep a positive outlook and take this as a learning experience or maybe an opportunity to review their own skills and career objective. Perhaps it is a blessing in disguise and who knows, maybe you would have found a better job that suits your personality in your next company.

I hate these reorganizations because they affect peoples lives. I run a wedding magician cardiff company and I hate to lay people off and I know it affects their whole life. Its really important to take your employeeys into consideration not just the business.

That's all sound advice. Too often IT professionals concentrate on life from their perspective and consider a re org to be a problem rather than an opportunity. Is life half full or half empty, do you have a heating system or a load of old boiler parts ? Look at life through the eyes of the management team. They are interested in who is supporting their decision, who is on their side and hence who may be the first in line for a promotion.

Don't resist, look for how it can advantage you after all you cannot stop the re org so go with the flow.

Reorgs are also a good time to get positive, mobile and moving in the right direction, 2 sides/views to every situation.

Surviving a re org is like getting through an auto insurance claim, it drains every ounce of energy from you.

Great post. I'd like to add some advice. This is especially true for employees in technical fields.

Stay an Expert: Take responsibility for educating yourself about changes in your field. The trick to remaining indispensable isn't poorly commenting your code. The trick is staying ahead of the pack in being able to keep up with changes so in a couple of years when some kid right out of school comes along she won't make you look like a dinosaur.

i have been reorging our company to deal with health reform and our ridiculous health insurance laws. All I can say is that I think this economy is heading towards a real depression.
